At 63, I gave up expecting a summer dress to look this good and feel like nothing

I have never written one of these before, and I nearly did not. But I have said this to enough friends now that it seemed easier to just write it down.

It is the hot days I used to dread. Here in Austin the summer is no joke, and everything I owned was the same losing choice. The comfortable things made me feel like I had stopped trying, and the things that looked put together were too warm or too fussy to actually wear in the heat. So I would stand at the closet on a beautiful morning feeling quietly defeated.

Cool, or looking like myself. It always seemed I could have one, never both.

So on the warm days I gave up and wore something I did not much like, and spent the day tugging at it.

Then my sister showed up in one

A long, flowing dress in the boldest black, white and yellow pattern, and she looked cool and completely pulled together on a day I was melting. I could not stop looking at it. It honestly looked more like a piece of art than a dress.

It is from Iris & Nora, a little boutique here that has been quietly dressing women our age for a few years now. They do a whole collection of these elegant geometric dresses. I ordered mine that evening.

What happened at the lunch

I wore it to a lunch here in town on the first really hot day.

Three women stopped to ask me where it was from before dessert. One of them was my friend Sue, who I have known since our kids were little and who has never once said a word about anything I have worn. She told me I looked like I had somewhere important to be. I had made no real effort at all, which is rather the point.

What stayed with me, though, was that I did not think about it once in the heat. It is light and it moves with you, so even with the long sleeves I stayed cool all afternoon. I have barely taken it off since, to the market, to dinner, out on the porch of an evening.

Three things I have learned since

One. It does the impossible thing. It looks like I fussed for an hour and it feels like nothing at all. The bold print does the work, so all I did was put it on.

Two. Cool and covered are not opposites. The fabric is light and breathes, so even the long sleeves stay comfortable in the heat, and they cover the tops of my arms, which I appreciate more than I will admit.

Three. It flatters without clinging. The relaxed shape skims over everything instead of holding on to it, so I feel easy in it all day.

About the price

I will be honest, the price made me suspicious more than anything.

It is $54.95. It was $110.00.

My first thought was that there had to be a catch, because a dress that looks this striking and stays this comfortable usually costs a good deal more.

There is no catch that I have found. It is a small boutique selling directly, and they run a summer sale to move the season's stock. I read the reviews before I ordered a second color, the way I imagine you are doing now. Just over three hundred of them, sitting at 4.2 stars. Not the suspiciously perfect five you see on some sites, which if anything made me trust it more. The same things kept coming up. One woman had written, “Wore it to a summer party and could not believe how cool it stayed even with the sleeves. So many compliments on the print.” That was the one that decided it for me.

What I would tell you if we were friends

If you and I were sitting on the porch with a glass of iced tea and you asked me, this is what I would say.

If the heat leaves you standing at the closet with nothing that is cool to put on and still feels like you, it is worth ten minutes of an evening to take a look.

Not because a dress changes anything. It does not. But being comfortable in the heat and still liking what you see in the mirror, at the same time, is a small thing I had stopped expecting, and I would rather you did not stop expecting it either.

The sale is on now, they come in all sorts of prints from an XS to a 5XL, and the nicest ones go first.

I do not dread the hot days anymore. I kind of look forward to them now.
