A letter from a reader
At 63, I was the most covered-up woman on every beach trip we took
I have never written anything like this before, and I want to say at the start that I am not a writer and I am not in the habit of telling other women what to wear.
But three different women asked me about a dress at a beachfront dinner in Port Aransas, and I have now explained it enough times that it seemed easier to write it down properly.
For years, my beach trip packing worked on one rule. Cover it. Arms covered, knees covered, necklines up to my chin, in Texas heat, on the coast, in August. I was the woman at the beach restaurant in sleeves, quietly cooking, while everyone else ordered another round of shrimp.
Covered, hot, and telling myself that was simply the deal now.
Because the alternative, as far as I could see, was baring the parts I would rather keep quiet, and I was not doing that for anybody. So sleeves it was. Every trip, every summer, for about a decade.

The cover-up trap
Here is the deal the stores offer a woman my age in summer. You can have the cover-up clothes, which cover everything, including any sense that you are a woman on vacation. Or you can have the vacation clothes, which bare precisely the things you spent the last decade learning to dress around.
All or nothing. Nun or knees. Nobody in fashion seems to have asked whether there was a smarter place to draw the line.
Then I saw the woman at the next table
Last summer, at a restaurant on the coast, there was a woman at the next table who was clearly my age, and her shoulders were bare, and she looked absolutely magnificent.
Not because she had some figure the rest of us do not. Because of where her dress drew the line. And sitting there in my sleeves, it finally dawned on me. Shoulders are the one part of us that never lets us down. They do not crease, they do not sag, they hold an earring's worth of glamour all on their own, and I had spent ten years covering mine along with everything else.
The dress I found afterwards is from Iris & Nora, a small boutique here in Austin that has been quietly dressing women our age for a few years now. It is called the Anna, and it draws the line exactly where that woman's dress did.

It is a long, white, floaty dress with a wide neckline that rests just off the shoulders and two dark stripes across the chest, the kind of clean, European look that photographs beautifully. Below the neckline it asks nothing of you. It falls straight and loose from the shoulders to the floor, skimming past the arms, the middle, the hips, all of it, in a light premium material that moves like a sea breeze found a dress.
Everything I want covered, covered. The one part worth showing, shown. It took until 63, but somebody finally drew the line in the right place.
What happened at the beachfront dinner
I wore it to dinner on the water in Port Aransas, with flat sandals and my good earrings.
Three different women asked me where it was from. And Sue, who I have known for twenty years and who does not hand out comments, looked at me and said, well, look at you. From Sue, that is a whole speech.

But the part I keep coming back to is how I felt walking to the table. Not covered up, not on display. Just elegant, and cool for once, with the breeze actually reaching me. My husband took a photograph, and I am in it standing up straight.
It has since done a porch dinner at home and a Sunday lunch, and it turns heads at both, which is a strange new problem to have.

Three things I have learned since
One. Shoulders never age. That is the whole secret of this dress and I am passing it on. Whatever else has changed, your shoulders are exactly where you left them, and they look wonderful bare.
Two. Loose reads as elegant when the neckline is right. The dress is completely relaxed, but the off-shoulder line and the stripes make it look composed, not casual. It skims everything and shows nothing except the good bit.
Three. The sizing is honest. XS to 2XL, the same easy line the whole way through, in white, grey and black. The white with the dark stripes is the one people stop you about.
About the price
I want to be straightforward about this, because it was the thing that made me suspicious.
The Anna is $54.95. It was $110.00.
My first thought, honestly, was that there had to be a catch, because dresses that look like this in resort boutiques start at three times that.
There is no catch that I have found. They are a small boutique selling directly, so there is no department store taking a cut in the middle, and they run a summer sale to move the season's stock.
I did what I imagine you are doing now and went and read the reviews before I ordered. Just over three hundred of them, sitting at 4.2 stars. Not the suspiciously perfect five you see on some websites, which if I am honest made me trust it rather more. One woman had written, "It hides everything I want hidden and my husband could not stop looking at me. I felt elegant all evening and completely comfortable." That was the one that decided it for me.
What I would tell you if we were friends
If you and I were sitting on the porch with an iced tea and you asked me, this is what I would say.
If you have been the most covered-up woman on every trip, ask yourself what you are actually protecting. Because there is a version of covered that still feels like a vacation, and it turns out the difference is nothing more than where the neckline sits.
Not because a dress changes anything. It will not. But being at dinner on the water, cool and a little bit glamorous, instead of hot and hidden, is what those trips were supposed to feel like all along.
Two practical things. The sale is on now, and the middle sizes are the ones that go first. And once this stock is gone, it is gone.
I have shoulders again, and I intend to use them.
