At 63, my everyday clothes had quietly become leggings and whatever was clean

I have never written anything like this before, and I nearly did not. But I have said it to enough friends now that it seemed easier to just write it down.

It crept up on me slowly. The nice things stayed on their hangers for a "someday" that rarely came, and for ordinary life I reached for leggings, a longish top, whatever was clean. It is comfortable, and it is also a slow way of disappearing.

Comfortable, or presentable. On an ordinary Tuesday I had stopped even trying for both.

And most days are ordinary Tuesdays, which is rather the point.

I did not decide to dress like that. It happens one tired morning at a time, until the leggings are the whole wardrobe and the nice things are museum pieces.

How it happens

The comfortable clothes made for our everyday tend to be shapeless and dull, in greys and blacks that ask nothing of you. And the pretty things are cut for a life of occasions, which most of my days are not.

So you split your closet in two, wear the dull half every day, and save the nice half for a someday that keeps not arriving.

And getting dressed for an ordinary day becomes something you do without looking in the mirror.

What I had wrong

Here is the bit I got most wrong. I thought comfortable and pretty lived on opposite sides of the closet.

They do not. A soft, easy dress in a calm colour, cut to skim rather than cling, is every bit as comfortable as leggings. It just also looks like you meant it.

The trick was never dressing up. It was finding one easy thing that made an ordinary day feel a little better. That is the whole difference, and it took me until 63 to work it out.

The dress is called the Amelia

It is from Iris & Nora, a little boutique here in Austin that has been quietly dressing women our age for a few years now.

The dress is called the Amelia. A soft sage-green midi with a delicate botanical branch print, a gathered waist, and an easy, flowing drape. They do a whole collection of these prints, which is how I ended up with more than one.

The sage is such an easy colour that it goes with everything and never feels loud. It skims the middle instead of clinging, the length means I never think about my legs, and it is so comfortable I forget I have it on. But it does not look like I gave up, which is the thing I had never managed on an ordinary day.

That is really all there is to it. It is not complicated. It is just an everyday dress that somebody thought about.

What happened on an ordinary Tuesday

I wore it to the farmers market and then straight on to lunch, nothing planned.

Three women asked me where it was from before I had finished my coffee. One of them was my friend Sue, who never comments on clothes, and who said I looked lovely for a Tuesday. I have decided to take that as a compliment.

What stayed with me, though, was that I felt like myself doing the most ordinary things. Comfortable all day, not once fussing with anything. I have barely taken it off since, to the market, to lunch, out with the dog first thing.

Three things I have learned since

One. A calm colour does the work. The sage goes with everything and never shouts, so getting dressed takes no thought at all.

Two. Easy beats fussy. You pull it on and you are done, no zips, no belt, nothing to decide, which on a busy morning is everything.

Three. Comfortable can look considered. I no longer believe everyday has to mean invisible, and I feel a little silly for the years I did.

About the price

I will be honest, the price made me a little suspicious.

The Amelia is $53.95. It was $93.00.

My first thought was that there had to be a catch, because a dress this comfortable that still looks this pretty usually costs a good deal more.

There is no catch that I have found. It is a small boutique selling directly, and they run a summer sale to move the season's stock. I read the reviews before I ordered a second color, the way I imagine you are doing now. Just over three hundred of them, sitting at 4.2 stars. Not the suspiciously perfect five you see on some sites, which if anything made me trust it more. The same things kept coming up. One woman had written, “The most comfortable dress I own, and I reach for it more than anything else in my closet.” That was the one that decided it for me.

What I would tell you if we were friends

If you and I were sitting out on the porch with a glass of iced tea and you asked me, this is what I would say.

If your everyday clothes have quietly become a uniform of leggings and whatever is clean, it is worth ten minutes of an evening to take a look.

Not because a dress changes anything. It does not. But feeling a little like yourself on an ordinary day, without giving up any comfort to do it, is a small thing I had stopped expecting, and I would rather you did not stop expecting it either.

The sale is on now, they come in a whole range of prints from a small to a 5XL, and the nicest ones go first.

I do not save the nice things for someday anymore.
