At 63, I finally found a floral that does not make me look girly or like a sofa

I have never written anything like this before, and I nearly did not. But I have said this to enough friends now that it seemed easier to just write it down.

For years I stayed away from florals completely. I had quietly decided they were not for us anymore. Either they were cut for a twenty-five-year-old, or the print was so big and busy it made me look like a piece of furniture. So I stuck to plain, and dark, and forgettable, and told myself that was just good taste.

Girly, or like a sofa. I did not think there was a floral in between.

So on the warm days I reached for the same navy things I always did, and felt a little invisible in every one of them.

Then I saw one on a woman at the market

She was about my age, moving easily around the stalls in a soft floral that somehow looked elegant rather than fussy. The print was painterly, more like a watercolor than a wallpaper, and the whole thing floated as she walked. I asked her where it was from before I could stop myself.

It is from Iris & Nora, a little boutique here in Austin that has been quietly dressing women our age for a few years now. They do a whole collection of these floral summer dresses. I ordered mine that evening.

What happened at the lunch

I wore it to a lunch here in town on the first really hot day, with flat sandals and my good earrings.

Three women stopped to ask me where it was from before we had even ordered. One of them was my friend Sue, who I have known since our children were in grade school and who has never once said a word about anything I have worn. She told me I looked like I had somewhere lovely to be. I had made almost no effort, which is rather the point.

What stayed with me, though, was how it felt. It is so light I forgot I had it on, and it floats away from you instead of clinging, so I did not spend the afternoon tugging at anything. I have barely taken it off since, to the market, to dinner, out on the porch of an evening.

Three things I have learned since

One. The print is the whole trick. A painterly floral reads as elegant, where a big bold one reads as costume. This one looks considered, so all I did was put it on.

Two. Floating beats fitted. The loose cut skims over everything instead of holding on to it, which at our age is far kinder and, honestly, far cooler in the heat.

Three. Easy is a luxury. You pull it over your head and you are dressed. No zips, no fuss, no standing in front of the mirror deciding it does not work.

About the price

I will be honest, the price made me suspicious more than anything.

It is $44.95. It was $90.00.

My first thought was that there had to be a catch, because a dress that looks this pretty and stays this comfortable usually costs a good deal more.

There is no catch that I have found. It is a small boutique selling directly, and they run a summer sale to move the season's stock. I read the reviews before I ordered a second color, the way I imagine you are doing now. Just over three hundred of them, sitting at 4.2 stars. Not the suspiciously perfect five you see on some sites, which if anything made me trust it more. The same things kept coming up. One woman had written, “First floral I have felt like myself in. So light I forget I am wearing it, and I have had compliments all summer.” That was the one that decided it for me.

What I would tell you if we were friends

If you and I were sitting out on the porch with a glass of iced tea and you asked me, this is what I would say.

If you have kept away from florals because you decided somewhere along the way that they were not for us anymore, it is worth ten minutes of an evening to take a look.

Not because a dress changes anything. It does not. But feeling cool in the heat and still liking what you see in the mirror, at the same time, is a small thing I had stopped expecting, and I would rather you did not stop expecting it either.

The sale is on now, they come in all sorts of prints from a small to a 5XL, and the nicest ones go first.

I wear florals again. I did not think I would.
