At 63, I had a summer of weddings ahead and nothing in my closet I felt lovely in

A letter from a reader

At 63, I had a summer of weddings ahead and nothing in my closet I felt lovely in

I have never written anything like this before, and I want to say at the start that I am not a writer and I am not in the habit of telling other women what to wear.

But three different women asked me about this dress at a wedding here in Austin on Saturday, and I have now explained it enough times that it seemed easier to write it down properly.

It started with a summer of weddings and parties ahead of me, and a closet where everything was either too tight, too young, or the stiff shapeless thing they seem to think a woman my age should disappear into.

Too tight, too young, or the sad shapeless tent. Never simply lovely.

So I would stand there thinking I have nothing to wear, which is a ridiculous thing to think with a full closet, and yet it was true in the way that matters. I had nothing I felt truly lovely in.

A closet of occasion dresses that are too tight or too young
My closet before. Too tight, too young, or the stiff shapeless thing.

I did not choose that, not really. Nobody sets out to feel invisible at the one event where they would most like to feel like themselves. It happens quietly, one disappointing changing room at a time, until you stop expecting anything better.

How it happens

It creeps up on you. The dresses you loved in your forties start to feel a touch too tight across the middle, or a touch too eager. The stores answer that by offering you the other extreme, the shapeless tent in a sad colour, the thing they seem to think a woman past sixty ought to disappear into.

So you make do. You wear the same navy thing you have worn to every event for three years, and you pull a cardigan over it, and you tell yourself it does not matter. And then someone takes a photograph, and you see your own face doing that small apologetic thing, and you realize it does matter, a little.

What I had wrong

I had decided, somewhere along the way, that comfortable and lovely were two different rails and I had to pick one. That if a dress felt easy to wear it must look like I had stopped trying, and if it looked like an occasion it was going to pinch and pull and count down the minutes for me.

I do not believe that anymore. Not since this one. It turns out the reason I kept choosing frumpy was that I had never once been shown the third option. I just did not know it existed.

The dress is called the Elin

It is from Iris & Nora, a little boutique here that has been quietly dressing women our age for a few years now. They have their summer sale on at the moment, which is the other reason I am writing today.

The Elin is a soft, flowing midi in a watercolor floral, a peach and apricot base with little touches of dusty blue washed through it. It has a halter neckline gathered gently at the throat, and a gathered waist that gives you back a proper shape without gripping you anywhere. The fabric is a premium, lightweight material, light as air, and the skirt falls soft to mid-calf. They cut it from a small all the way to a 3XL, the same easy line the whole way up.

The Elin dress arriving in its packaging on the bed
The day it arrived. I opened it on the bed like a girl at Christmas.

I will be honest, I half expected to send it back. So many things look one way on the screen and another way in your hands. But I lifted it out of the wrapping and it floated, and I put it on there and then in the bedroom, and I did not want to take it off.

What happened at the wedding

I wore it with low heels and my good earrings, nothing more. Sue caught my eye across the tables and told me later I looked lovely, actually lovely, which coming from Sue is practically a standing ovation.

But the thing I keep coming back to is that I forgot I had it on. I sat through the whole lunch and I danced afterward, and not once did I tug at a waistband or shift a strap or count the minutes until I could get home and change. The fabric moves when you move. You feel dressed, and you feel free, at the same time.

That is when the first woman leaned over and asked. Then the one beside her. Then a third, on my way out, who touched my arm and said she had been looking for exactly this and given up.

The Elin dress laid over a porch chair at home
I wore it again a week later to a dinner, and felt completely myself.

Three things I have learned since

One. A waist you can actually breathe in is not a compromise. The gathered waist on this gives you a shape and still lets you eat your lunch, and I did not know how much I had been holding my stomach in until I stopped.

Two. Light fabric is kinder than stiff fabric. The material floats and skims instead of clinging, and on a warm Texas afternoon that is the difference between enjoying yourself and wishing you were home.

Three. One good dress that does both is worth ten that do neither. This one has already done a wedding and a dinner, and it does not crush or crease in between. It has quietly become the thing I reach for.

About the price

I want to be straightforward about this, because it was the thing that made me suspicious.

The Elin is $51.95. It was $94.00.

My first thought, honestly, was that there had to be a catch, because a flowing occasion dress like this usually costs a great deal more than that.

There is no catch that I have found. They are a small boutique selling directly, so there is no department store taking a cut in the middle, and they run a summer sale to move the season's stock before it turns.

I did what I imagine you are doing now and went and read the reviews before I ordered. Just over three hundred of them, sitting at 4.2 stars. Not the suspiciously perfect five you see on some sites, which if I am honest made me trust it more. Real people, mixed opinions, mostly very good.

One woman had written, "I have worn it to two weddings and a birthday and felt wonderful every time. It moves beautifully and it does not crush." That was the one that decided it for me.

Then I ordered it in time for the next wedding, and I am glad I did.

What I would tell you if we were friends

If we were sitting across a table and you told me you had a summer of weddings and parties ahead and nothing you feel truly lovely in, this is exactly where I would tell you to start. Not because it is fashionable, but because it is the rare thing that lets you feel beautiful and comfortable both at once.

The reason I am posting today instead of next week is simple. The sale is on now, and it is the middle sizes that go first every time. Once the summer stock is gone, it is gone until next year.

If you have been putting off looking because the last few times left you deflated, let this be the time you try again.

You are not too old for a dress that makes you feel lovely. You have just been shown the wrong dresses.
