At 63, I stopped dreading wedding invitations once I found this dress

I have never written anything like this before, and I nearly did not. But I have said it to enough friends now that it seemed easier to just write it down.

There is a particular dread that arrives with a wedding invitation once you are past sixty. It is not the wedding. It is the getting dressed for it. You want something smart enough for the day, but everything smart seems to want to squeeze you, or needs shapewear you cannot breathe in, or leaves your arms bare for the photographs. So you spend a month looking, buy something you do not love, and spend the whole day adjusting it.

Smart, or comfortable. At a wedding it always felt like I had to choose.

For years I chose smart, suffered quietly through the ceremony, and could not wait to get home and take the whole thing off.

Then a friend wore one to lunch

She sat down in a soft navy dress with gentle layered tiers and light sheer sleeves, and she looked completely put together and completely at ease, which at a lunch in a Texas summer is not a common combination. When I said so, she told me it was the most comfortable thing she owned and that she had worn it to two weddings already.

It is from Iris & Nora, a little boutique here in Austin that has been quietly dressing women our age for a few years now. They do a whole collection of these layered dresses. I ordered mine that evening.

What happened at the wedding

I wore it to a wedding here in town, with low heels and my good earrings.

Three women asked me where it was from before the speeches. One of them was my friend Sue, who I have known since our children were in grade school and who does not hand out compliments. She told me I looked elegant, which from Sue is practically a standing ovation.

What stayed with me, though, was that I forgot I had it on. The soft tiers skim over the middle instead of clinging, the sheer sleeves cover the tops of the arms, and the chiffon stays light and cool even sitting through a long ceremony. I was comfortable from the first hymn to the last dance, which I cannot say for a single wedding outfit before it.

Three things I have learned since

One. The tiers do the work. The soft layers float over the middle rather than gripping it, so it looks tailored without holding on to you anywhere.

Two. Covered can still be elegant. The sheer sleeves cover the tops of the arms, which I appreciate more than I will admit, and they do it without looking like you are hiding.

Three. It is not just for weddings. I have since worn it to a dinner and to church, and with a different necklace it did not look like the same dress either time.

About the price

I will be honest, the price made me suspicious more than anything.

It is $54.95. It was $110.00.

My first thought was that there had to be a catch, because an occasion dress that looks this refined and feels this easy usually costs a great deal more, and often needs altering on top.

There is no catch that I have found. It is a small boutique selling directly, and they run a summer sale to move the season's stock. I read the reviews before I ordered a second color, the way I imagine you are doing now. Just over three hundred of them, sitting at 4.2 stars. Not the suspiciously perfect five you see on some sites, which if anything made me trust it more. The same things kept coming up. One woman had written, “Wore it to my son's wedding and was comfortable from the ceremony to the last dance. It covered my arms and I felt wonderful.” That was the one that decided it for me.

What I would tell you if we were friends

If you and I were sitting out on the porch with a glass of iced tea and you asked me, this is what I would say.

If you have a wedding or a dinner coming up and you are already dreading the search for something both smart and comfortable, it is worth ten minutes of an evening to take a look.

Not because a dress changes anything. It does not. But being properly comfortable at an occasion and still liking what you see in the photographs, at the same time, is a small thing I had stopped expecting, and I would rather you did not stop expecting it either.

A wedding invitation does not fill me with dread anymore.
